What is the Promass I 100
The Promass I 100 is a high-performance Coriolis mass flowmeter designed for industrial applications, offering measurements of mass flow, density, and temperature, with optional viscosity measurement.
It is part of the Endress+Hauser “Promass I” line, featuring a straight single-tube sensor design and very compact transmitter housing.
Measuring principle
- The fundamental principle is Coriolis force measurement: the flow tube is vibrated and the fluid flowing through causes a phase shift in oscillations between inlet & outlet positions. This phase shift is proportional to mass flow.
- The tube is excited at its resonance; changes in oscillation frequency due to changes in mass (tube + fluid) are used to compute density.
- Temperature of the measuring tube is also measured, both for fluid temperature and to compensate temperature effects.
Key Technical Features & Specifications
Here are some of its important characteristics:

Details
|
Flow variables measured
|
Mass flow, density, temperature; optional viscosity.
|
Sensor design
|
Straight single-tube design; “easy cleanable”.
|
Tube material / wetted parts
|
Titanium for measuring tube; other parts in stainless steel or coating depending on version.
|
Size range (nominal diameter)
|
DN 8 to DN 80 (≈ 3/8″ to 3″).
|
Accuracy
|
• Liquids: about ±0.1 % for mass & volume flow; <-- density accuracy in liquid ~ ±0.0005 g/cm³. • Gases: larger error, e.g. approx ±0.5 % mass flow.
|
Temperature / Pressure ranges
|
Medium temperature: from −50 °C up to approx +150 °C. Process pressure: up to PN100 (or equivalent), specifics depending on DN, material etc.
|
Environmental / Protection
|
High ingress protection (IP69K in many versions). Robust transmitter housing.
|
Installation
|
“Full-bore” design to minimize pressure drop. As its straight tube, less demanding for inlet/outlet runs compared to bent-tube designs.
|
Outputs / Communication
|
Multiple typical industrial outputs: analog (4-20 mA with HART), digital protocols (Modbus RS-485, PROFIBUS, PROFINET, etc.), pulse/frequency/switch outputs.
|
Additional features
|
Integrated web server for local configuration, diagnostics. “Heartbeat Technology” for verification and monitoring.

Advantages
- High accuracy and stability: Since the measurement is mass‐based and not strongly influenced by fluid viscosity, density, or flow profile, it gives very reliable readings.
- Multi-variable measurement: Flow, density, temperature (and viscosity optionally) reduce need for multiple sensors.
- Compact & robust: Small footprint transmitter, full-bore, straight tube helps in installations where space is limited and/or cleaning is needed.
- Low pressure loss: Full bore and straight single tube help minimizing pressure drop. Good for sensitive fluids.
- Good for hygiene and cleaning: Because of the easy-clean straight tube. Also options exist for hygienic/stainless housing.
Limitations / Considerations
- Cost tends to be relatively high vs simpler flowmeters. More sophisticated construction, more electronics.
- For very low flow or very small diameters, sensitivity and signal-to-noise becomes more challenging ‒ need to check minimum flow (cut-off) for your application.
- The wetted materials (Titanium, stainless) have to be compatible with the fluid (chemically, abrasive, etc.). If the fluid is aggressive or contains solids, consider wear or corrosion.
- Temperature and pressure limits: depending on the exact model; ensure your process operating envelope fits within them.
- Maintenance might require more care (cleaning, calibration) due to the precision of the instrument.
Typical Applications
The Promass I 100 is suitable for many industrial sectors, especially where accurate mass flow + density + temperature are needed, such as:
- Chemical process lines
- Food & beverage where hygiene / cleaning is required
- Pharmaceuticals
- Oil & gas (for certain liquids/gases)
- Skid / module builders (because of compact size)
- Any application where pressure drop must be minimized or full-bore is preferable.
